REBOND? BRAZILAN? REBOND BRAZILAN?

Ding! Our Business Suite Messenger just alerted us of a new message, it's 2AM and we know what the question will most likely be. It's, "Rebond HM." Rebonds are by far our most asked about service. Interestingly, they're not our most completed service, more often than not, the customer will decide to get a Brazilian or a Rebond Brazilian. The reason for the choice isn't price, it's understanding what the services are. Once the customer meets our stylists and understands what they'll be getting, they find that a Brazilian or Rebond Brazilian is better suited for their goal.

BROAD DEFFINITIONS

Rebonds are treatments used to straighten hair. Brazilians are used to fight frizz and smooth hair, and rebond Brazilians combine both treatments. All three do this by affecting and keratin in your hair.

KERATIN

To understand how these treatments work, we first need to understand the structure of hair and what causes hair to be straight or curly. Keratin is a protein found in the center of a strand of hair. It's arranged in strands that form a double helix shape. The strands are held together by disulfide bonds, salt bonds, and hydrogen bonds. Disulfide bonds are primarily responsible for your hair type, more disulfide bonds create curly hair, while fewer result in straighter hair. Disulfide bonds also contribute you your hair's strength. Salt bonds contribute to your hair's strength. Hydrogen bonds contribute to the hair's elasticity and are a factor in hair frizz.

REBOND - WHAT IT IS AND HOW IT WORKS

A rebond treatment is a chemical hair straightening process. Of the hair straightening treatments commonly offered in the Philippines, this is the most powerful. There are three main components to the treatment- water, chemical, and heat. The goal is to break down the bonds between the keratin strands and then reform them forcing the hair to take on a straighter shape. The process takes about 4-6 hours depending on your hair type and original structure. This is a very delicate procedure, of particular concern is the chemical aspect. If not applied correctly, the hair may become damaged, in some cases the damage may be irreversible. This treatment should only be performed by a qualified stylist in a salon using quality products. The rebond effect, with proper maintenance should last about 6 months to a year. Due the nature of the chemicals, this treatments should only be performed once in a 6 month period.

REBOND SAFETY

When administered by a qualified stylist in a salon with quality products, a rebond can be conducted safely. When mishandled, either through incorrect application or excessive use there are dangers. The primary ingredient in most rebond formulas is formaldehyde. Excessive exposure to formaldehyde can increase your risk for certain cancers. In pregnant women, there is a risk to the fetus and there are risks associated with breast feeding. There are many gray market products advertised as formaldehyde-free, many offering quick results or increased safety. Products labeled as formaldehyde free may ins some cases contain up to 10% formaldehyde. Many of these products also contain methylene glycol or methanal which pose similar concerns. We have found no product that we would recommend for pregnant or breast-feeding customers. If the treatment is applied in incorrect quantities, allowed to stay in too long, or applied too often, you may experience damage, hair loss, and hair breakage. Note that a small degree of hair loss and breakage is expected for the treatment. We do not recommend chemical straightening products for children.

BRAZILIAN AND REBOND BRAZILIAN - WHAT THEY ARE AND HOW THEY WORK

Brazilian treatments, named after their country of origin, come in two forms, Brazilian Blowout and Brazilian Kerabond. Both are primarily used as a hair smoothing treatment, the result will be a frizz free look that maintains volume and sheen. Brazilian treatments also offer more styling options over a rebond. In a blowout treatment, a protective layer of keratin is applied to each hair strand sealing the cuticle.

In a Brazilian Kerabond treatment, keratin is infused into the spaces between the keratin strands already in your hair. Brazilian Kerabonds offer a deeper, more fortifying result. The process for both treatments is similiar to that in a rebond where water, chemical, and heat are used.

Brazilian Blowouts have some straightening ability, although the effect will be much more subdued than a rebond. Again, this is a hair smoothing treatment, not a hair straightening treatment. Brazilian Kerabonds will also offer some straightening but with a more wavy appearance. Brazilian Kerabond treatments are also safer for those with thin hair.

Rebond Brazilians combine both effects producing straighter hair that retains more volume than a rebond alone.

Brazilian treatments, with proper aftercare should last about 3-6 months and typically take around and hour and half to two hours depending on the starting hair type and structure.

BRAZILIAN TREATMENT SAFETY

Brazilian treatments must be performed by a qualified stylist in salon. Like rebonds, these treatments also involve the use of chemicals which must be carefully handled. Formaldehyde remains a concern and if mismanaged may increase the risk of certain cancers. Brazilian treatments are not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. We do not recommend these treatments for children.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR REBOND OR BRAZILIAN WITH PROPER AFTER CARE

Whether you chose a rebond or Brazilian, proper aftercare is essential to ensure the full life of your service. For both types of services, the advice remains the same:

  1. Avoid getting your hair wet for 72 hours (protect your keratin bonds and cuticle coat)

  2. Limit hair washing to 3-4 times a week

  3. Use shampoo designed for straight hair

  4. Condition with every wash

  5. Towel dry, avoid heat (remember heat affects the bonds between keratin strands)

  6. Come back for periodic oil treatments

  7. Trim the ends of your hair every 6-8 weeks

  8. Stop by for a retouch in about 3 months

  9. A healthy diet is the foundation of beautiful hair

If you make a mistake with your aftercare, don't panic! A qualified stylist may be able to help reverse or at least limit the damage.

Don't you deserve to look and feel your best?
